I knew there was flexibility on your passport gender designation since ~2015 because my passport was my first ID with an 'M' on it, and I got it around that time. I am a threat to no one, extensively background-checked with no criminal history, with an exemplary record of service to my community, invited and included by fellow women in self-defense martial arts and classes that make us safer, to abuse survivor support groups, and more. I've helped other women break free of abuse. I've been paid to keep people safe, and risked myself, saving people's lives. I pay my taxes, am industrious, in-demand as a worker, loved, and a good friend to many.

After being sexually and physically abused numerous times and stalked, I liked to use my passport card for identification because it show no address or current state of residence, unlike my driver's license.

Then, to help me break free from stalking, abuse, and its harmful aftermath, *I was as granted a new name by the government, explicitly for my safety, so I could move forward from being abused.*

**But with this policy in place, I cannot get an accurate passport or passport card, that does not jeopardize my safety.**

Rather than being able to get a new, correct passport card I can move forward with, the federal government has limited my safety:

* Use my driver's license, with my address and other details on it. I cannot use this for international travel, if that becomes necessary for my safety.
* Use my old card or passport if I leave the country, with a name I need to stop using for my safety and wellbeing. Data breaches and resale happens all the time. Using my passport with my old name on it creates a trail that can be used to find me, and new people I meet can look up my old name, then leverage what they find and what I have been through to abuse me further.
* Get a new one, with a wrong sex marker, that will spur scruitiny and digging into my life and make it harder and less safe as I attempt to move forward from abuse. I am not male. Every relevant sex trait of mine is now aligned with my female neurologic sex, which has never been anything but biologically female, from conception on to the later trimesters, my birth, and my life until now. I am female, look female, and a document meant to "identify" me for legitimate ends will reflect that. A wrong marker will make it far more probable that I am patted down by *men*, strip searched, detained in an unsafe manner (*"v-coding"*), harassed, sexually assaulted, or raped *again* as a prior victim of childhood sexual abuse, CSAM, domestic violence, and more. If I leave the country for my safety, my options are limited by having a wrong marker, the safe areas I can flee to are fewer. Every time I must use my ID, my horrific and stigmatized medical condition, which nearly killed me, that I have struggled and bled and spent all I had to at various points try to be free of, so I could live an ordinary life, will be revealed, and abuse and marginalization may follow.

Correct me if I’m wrong but if you drive from the US to Canada, only the Canadian side checks your passport.

Keep this in mind if things get worse and you currently have a passport that the US government might consider invalid or outright fraudulent. It’s what motivated me to get both the book and the card just in case one got taken away I could still leave by car.

Fortunately, this isn't as bad as it sounds.

The worst case scenario here is the fact that you may not be able to have your preferred identification on your passport. However, the case that is being litigated in the mean time is what I am personally more optimistic about.

While I am not certain of exact outcomes, you will still be able to travel.

I can’t say that this is good but from what I understand, here’s some rays of sunshine for you.

1. This shouldn’t affect travel overall, it’s only targeting identification. I think many states will look the other way overall because this stupid EO can’t be enforced overall. It’s just identity politics. And considering the Supreme Court had given at least one trans man a positive ruling, I genuinely don’t think this was anything other than a short term victory.

2. This doesn’t exactly give Trump much power. The Supreme Court just gave him time to appeal. This doesn’t necessarily mean that he will win the case overall. If anything, they didn’t interfere with the lower courts, just threw it back to them. This article says that they have given him the power to “enforce” but nothing else. Basically, they allowed him to continue bullying but they hadn’t interfered with the multiple other cases against this EO. 

3. Lawsuits. Tons of them will pop up. Plus, companies and various areas where passports are made can easily defy something like this.

Hey man. Others have given input on the objective impacts of this that you'll probably still be able to travel where safe but the passport will still risk misgendering you. How much relief that provides, I dunno because I don't know you. 

This ruling scares me too, but don't forget, in spite of their hatred, you yet draw breath. And I think that's a lot of cause for celebrating. I suspect the overhead on reissuing tons of govt docs is going to be expensive and time-consuming.  

Though it could make the process of an affirming change possible for the moment, I don't think there's any feasible plan in place to do much about existing documents. But I'm no lawyer.

At any rate, let the polls be a sign that public impression of the admin is waning, and people who already haven't figured out this is a scapegoating tactic may yet realize this (and everything else the admin is doing) is a steaming load of something.

We celebrated too hard yesterday, the Supreme Court was like, "Orange daddy needs a win!" As someone mentioned, there is a case that's working its way through the system, but for now, yeah, this allows the ghouls in government to enforce that horrible executive order. Anecdotally, you can take it from older trans people that we were able to travel when our gender markers didn't reflect our presentation. Yes it's a pain in the ass. Yes that can cause complications. No, they will not deny your travel.

Does this impact TSA agents? The physical characteristics will be different from the sex designation on the passport or Driver's license. I know the picture will be the same as  the person carrying the document, but this ruling essentially says that the documented sex designation has no essential information value.

A passport isn't a historical document, its an identifying document. This makes as much sense as saying a drivers license should list your height at birth... Whatever information there is in the passport is meant to make the person standing in front of a government official identifiable as the person in the document. And anything else is antithetical to its purpose and use.
